Challenge Canberra – Sprint Distance Triathlon – Draft Legal and Non Drafting
If you’re looking for the perfect entry point into triathlon, the Sprint Distance at CHALLENGE CANBERRA is your race. This year we will be running two sprint races. One will be draft legal (no TT bike or aerobars) and the other non drafting and both for age group athletes, so best of both worlds. With a 750m swim, 20km bike, and 5km run, it’s the ideal opportunity to experience the thrill of a major event and see what Challenge racing is all about.
Note: The Draft Legal Sprint race is an optional format where drafting (riding directly behind another cyclist) is permitted. If you’re unsure or new to racing, we recommend entering the standard Sprint Triathlon (Non-Drafting), which follows the traditional triathlon rules used across Australia.
Draft Legal Endorsement
Any athlete that wishes to compete in a Draft Legal event must have a Draft Legal Credential attached to their profile on JustGo. Athletes who wish to participate in a draft legal triathlon event MUST be a AusTri Member.
In order to register for your Draft Legal Credential, you must have demonstrated competency across all Level 1 skills within the Cycling Aptitude Standards. This must be witnessed and signed off by a Development-level AusTriathlon accredited coach, who will verify that you have successfully completed all required skills.
Any questions, please email pathways@triathlon.org.au
There will be the option of racing an Open category for junior elite and elite/open age group athletes. Enter your age group now and at registration you can move to the open wave.
The race begins with a 750m swim off Black Mountain Peninsula, in calm, sheltered waters perfect for beginners and experienced athletes alike. The 20km bike course is a single lap featuring smooth roads, light undulations, and a gradual climb that will suit the stronger riders and if in a pack an opportunity to drop your fellow competitors. The course is fast, flowing, and fun from start to finish.
The 5km run is an out and back course within the peninsula precinct, taking athletes along the lakeside paths and is all fast and flat. It’s spectator-friendly, scenic, and full of Challenge Family atmosphere — perfect for your next step in the sport or your return to racing.
